Its half term, Valentine’s Day is approaching- so that can mean only one thing. Date day with the kids, of course! If you’re lucky enough to be spending some time alone with your partner this year, then good for you! But if, like many other parents across the UK, you’re juggling work, kids, childcare and more- then this post is for you. Three child friendly recipes with honey, that you can try today. Who knows, the effort might exhaust them into an early night for you!
Cooking with kids
Here at Hilltop HQ, we’re huge fans of involving the little ones in the kitchen- after all, we’re shaping future chefs and bakers as we speak! But there are a few thing we like to keep in mind when cooking with kids:
- Time it right. Don’t try to bake a cake when your little one is tired, hungry or just not in the mood. Trust us, the mess just isn’t worth it! And speaking of mess…
- Don’t get stressed over a little (!) spilled milk or a couple of cracked eggs. It’s going to happen, just accept it now.
- Follow a recipe. Let you little one help to collect the ingredients and read out the steps to follow.
- Make it safe. Obviously, sharp knives and hot appliances are for adults only.
- Let them taste test! It’s only fair, after all.
Ready? Let’s go!
Banana lollipops
This one is ridiculously easy, and a great one for really young kids to get stuck into. You only need a banana, some honey (try our handy Blossom Honey tub for easy dunking) rice crispies and bamboo skewers/ lollipop sticks.
Cut the banana into good sized chunks- in half usually works well. Then carefully push the banana pieces onto the sticks. Then its over to the kids- show them how to dunk each lollipop into the honey, and then into the rice crispies. That’s it- delicious!
Ginger and Honey biscuits
This is a great one for slightly older kids who are feeling a little more ambitious- and the combination of honey and ginger is a classic pairing too. Grab the recipe here.
These can be made and cut into any shaper you like, so we’re going to stick with our Valentine’s theme and suggest love hearts- but really, its up to you! When the biscuits are cool, you can help your little one to decorate them- another activity that will keep them busy for a little while. Win win!
Honey Buns
A tried and tested Hilltop favourite, honey buns are so easy to make and delicious too. You can add nuts, chocolate chips or even a little orange zest if you like- but the original recipe really is just perfect by itself, and 100% child friendly too. Here’s how to make them:
Ingredients:
250g honey (we recommend our delicious Spanish Orange Blossom)
225g coconut oil
100g coconut sugar
300g self raising flour
3 eggs
Method:
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
- In a saucepan, heat the sugar, oil and honey to boiling then allow to cool for 20 minutes.
- Whisk the eggs, then add the cooled honey mixture. Whisk for another three minutes.
- Add the flour and mix well.
- Fill cup cake cases (this is probably the messiest part!)
- Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden.
Top tip: keep a few of these little beauties aside so that you can serve them up when the kids have gone to bed!
